DIE STUMME SERENADEup
OperaNederland ****
Already with his staging of The Merry Widow director Marc Krone showed that he has an unerring sense of the light genre. With Die Stumme Serenade he delivers a first class direction again. Krone gets the best from his singers, lets them work the whole room and knows how to get them to deliver their very best.

NRC ****
Director Marc Krone has the young singers of Dutch National Opera Academy play comedy in the most effective way, that is to say: dead serious.

VPRO ****
Die Stumme Serenade: this forgotten gem shines as it was intended to shine!

Telegraaf *****
Marc Krone signs for a tasteful direction with subtly accentuated humor.

‘Das war das Beste, was ich bisher bei Young Euro Classic erlebt habe.’

Is it an opera? An operetta? Or a musical? None of the above: Die Stumme Serenade embodies a genre all of its own.
Burning love, nightly serenades, kidnappings, bombings and haute couture packed in one big wave of brilliant music. Die Stumme Serenade is a forgotten gem from the rich oeuvre of Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
In it we see how the Neapolitan fashion king Andrea Coclé – surrounded by his harem of models and mannequins – sacrifices all, for the love of a woman. A woman who unfortunately is married to the most influential person of the country... Bombs are placed under beds and criminals are exposed. And while the alcohol gets to the protagonists heads, we witness how love almost costs Coclé his head. Will he be granted pardon, or is a cruel death by firing squad awaiting him? And all this under the stirring sounds of the orchestra.
Die Stumme Serenade is performed by an international cast of young artists from the Dutch National Opera Academy, and musicians of the NJO.
